What is numerology?
The term numerology refers to any of the many systems, traditions, and beliefs in the mystical or esoteric connection between numbers and material things or living beings. The word numerology is a compound of the Latin word numerus, which means number, and the Greek word logos, which means speech, word, concept, thought, and the term numerology could be defined as the science of numbers.
Numerology and numerology divinations were popular among early numerologists and mathematicians such as Pythagoras, but are no longer considered part of mathematics, but considered pseudo-mathematics by most scholars. A similar history connects them with the development and separation of astronomy from astrology, and chemistry from alchemy. A special area is the mystical Kabbalah, which is based on Jewish mysticism and tradition. Today, numerology is most often associated with the occult sciences, together with astrology and similar methods of divination.
Historians believe that modern numerology is an integration of the teachings of ancient Babylon, Pythagoras and his followers (Greece 6th century BC), the astrological principles of Hellenistic Alexandria, early Christian mysticism, the occultism of the early Gnostics and the Hebrew system of Kabbalah. The records of the Indian Vedas, the Chinese “Circle of the Dead”, and the Egyptian “Book of Rulers of the Secret House” (Ritual of the Dead); there is strong evidence for the millennial existence of numerology. Pythagoras and other philosophers of his time believed that mathematical principles were more “practical” (easier to regulate and classify) than physical ones, and therefore more real. This idea is in line with philosophical pragmatism, and the choice of permanent concepts instead of changing physicality. St. Augustine Hippo (354 – 430) wrote “Numbers are the universal language that divinity offers to humanity as proof of truth”. Like Pythagoras, he believed that behind everything there are numerical connections, and that the secrets of these connections can be revealed through mental search or divine providence. After the first session of Nicaea in 325, the Roman Empire classified deviation from the beliefs of the state Church as a civil offense. Numerology did not please the Christian authority of the time. It has been attributed to unrecognized beliefs, along with astrology and other forms of divination and “magic”. Through this religious purification, the spiritual significance previously attached to “sacred” numbers began to disappear. Despite the suppression, many remain devoted believers and keep the knowledge secret. An example of the influence of numerology on English literature can be found in Sir Thomas Brown’s work “Discourse The Garden of Cyrus” from 1658. In that work, the author illustrates the significance of the number five and the relevant matrix of that number through art, nature and mysticism. “The Discourse” is a late example of the influence of Pythagorean thought on English literature. In some cases of numerological divination, the name and date of birth are used as means of analysis and definition of a person’s character and tendencies.

Truncation of numbers
Numerologists often shorten numbers or words in a process called number reduction, then draw conclusions based on the result of that process, a single digit. Shortening a number means adding up all the digits of that number, then repeating the same process as needed, until the final result – one digit. Words are added by assigning corresponding values to the letters, according to their order in the alphabet (A=1, B=2, etc.). Examples:
3.489 -> 3 + 4 + 8 + 9 = 24 -> 2 + 4 = 6
Day -> 6 + 1 + 19 = 26 -> 2 + 6 = 8
A faster way to reduce to a single digit is to simply apply the “modulo” function, value 9. There are various methods of addition, including Chaldean, Pythagorean, Hebrew, Helyn Hitchcock, Phonetic, Japanese, and Indian.
