Cardinal Quality Characteristics

Houses Ruled: First, Fourth, Seventh, Tenth
Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn
Keywords: Enterprising, Uncooperative, Assertive, Aggressive, Creative
Traits: Cardinal signs initiate and set the tone for a season.

The Cardinal Quality signs’ are Capricorn, Cancer, Libra or Aries, and the houses ruled by the quality are the First, Fourth, Seventh and Tenth Houses.

This Quality is the instigator of most things with the zodiac. These signs are found in all the key points on a chart wheel: the Imum Coeli (I.C.), the Medium Coeli (M.C. or Midheaven), the Ascendant and the Descendant. If you are of the Cardinal Quality, it’s likely that you too like to instigate most activities and work. You’re very active and enterprising. Whilst you enjoy getting a project up and running, it’s very unlikely that most of them ever get finished whilst you’re around. All of that is because whilst you’re an instigator of things, you’re not a massive fan of ending things.

Despite all that though, you’ll never find a cardinal person sitting around doing nothing. These individuals are full of life and are ambitious in a way you can’t ignore. Some people might misunderstand this ambition as arrogance, and sometimes, unfortunately, it can be that, but most of the time, their energy and zest for life wins the group over.

Cardinal signs are intelligent and never want to be on the losing team. Whilst they don’t finish every project they start, they do enjoy starting them and are constantly doing something. The energy expressed through this quality is very powerful, but it’s usually short lived – a bit like when a match is struck – there is that initial burst of flame that is big but it dies down quickly. People who are put off by their energy and unintentional dominance, should just stand back and let the cardinal individuals get on with it.
